Hello Everyone,

A fellow Canadian advocate who has debilitating Long Covid has found herself in a place of housing insecurity and extreme financial precarity, and due to many setbacks, she is considering Medical Assistance in Dying . She has reached out to a few trusted Twitter contacts with a document describing her situation, acknowledging the mortifying experience of making her plight known, and humbly asking anyone with means for help. Currently she is too sick from Long Covid to take care of herself and work full time, and she has come to the difficult conclusion that she no longer has the capacity to simultaneously advocate for herself, generate income, apply for other jobs, and rest to try to get better.

As we have seen throughout the country among our many friends and co-strugglers, social assistance programs are lacking at best and are administratively impenetrable at worst. Being forced into a life or death situation where she must rely on the kindness of strangers has been terrifying, demoralizing, and an incredible blow to her psychological health.

In her own words: “Currently, I just have no armor, no reserves, in any capacity, to function. I do not want to die. I would prefer to continue to tolerate my physical disabilities and pain, contribute something to the world by working, and staying safely housed and being around for my kid for as long as possible.  ... not sure if I can keep myself safe and housed that long, but that is the only light I see at this point - trying to stay housed and work as much as possible until I can get some support from the government based on my age. I am feeling beyond helpless, hopeless, valueless and extremely exhausted and traumatized. I have had help, and really have had people help give me "breathing room" but I entirely admit that I have not been entirely honest with myself or others about how debilitated I am, and how slow my work is going. And my breathing room has, over this past year anyway, been not quite enough room to calm my nervous system and heal a bit and work constructively .. it has almost always been breathing room of a month or so, which has demonstrably not been quite enough .... guess i am hoping with a bit longer runway and security I can feel safe again and function ... that may be entirely unrealistic.”

Many of us at PoPNB interact with and follow this advocate. Many more of the advocates we follow follow her in turn. I know everyone here wishes to help where we can. For this reason, a semi-private GoFundMe has been set up for anyone willing to contribute. We have done amazing, big work, and we have amazing, big hearts. If you are able, please consider donating. Every amount helps and no amount is too small.

 Thank you.
