Times are challenging for everyone with this global pandemic, and it has brought on many changes for all of us. However, for my friend Meg and her beautiful family, the consequences of the pandemic have pushed them to the breaking point.
Right now, we are being told to “stay home”, and as challenging as this has been, most of us reading this, have a safe home to live in.
This is not a “luxury” the Horne’s have. It has been 620 days since Meg and her family have safely been able to live in the home they are paying for, solely due to Builder negligence and a seemingly corrupt Home Warranty Program.
Over the past 620 days, they have carried their children in and out of rentals 12 times, and had over a year and a half of constant anxiety and fear of not knowing where they will be, or how they will provide a safe and consistent home for their 3 beautiful children.
I have decided to start this Go Fund Me after being encouraged by the show of kindness and support in communities and across the internet. I’m hopeful that with more coverage, someone out there can help right this wrong, and that we can collectively contribute and give what we can to help a family who desperately needs our help.
Having a home is an easy thing to take for granted, until you don’t have one. Until you’re pregnant with your third baby and because your builder and warranty provider haven’t provided the bare minimum of their professional obligation: a home safe to occupy, you are forced to bring your 3 day old baby “home” to a motel. And because you’re home isn’t safe to occupy, your personal possessions are in your vehicle, until the cruel people in this world break into your vehicle and steal them, on 3 separate occasions.
All of this has been inflicted on the Hornes through no fault of their own and could happen to any of us. They bought a new home from Hopewell Residential in the SouthEast of Calgary, Alberta 5 years ago. At the time of purchase, they paid for warranty coverage by Alberta New Home Warranty Canada Corporation as part of their purchase price and signed a purchase and sale agreement stating their builder (Hopewell Residential) commits to constructing a home that meets Alberta Building Code. The builder and warranty program have demonstrated gross negligence in construction practices, and failed to fulfill their professional obligations and policies.
These companies claim: “our number one goal is to deliver a home that meets your needs, as well as your expectations- Hopewell Residential”.
You NEED a home to be built safely. You NEED a home that is NOT going to contribute to chronic health issues. You EXPECT a home is built to code. You EXPECT a home will be built to be habitable longer than 5 years.
Their failures include but are not limited to a structural wall being built incorrectly, which is INADEQUATE to support the house(!) and a level 3 (the largest) mould contamination from incorrectly installed windows. Due to poor building practice, failures in the building envelope exacerbated the spread of mould by allowing the mould from rotting studs, OSB and insulation to be airborne within the entire home. This resulted in contamination of not only the air they were breathing, but the entirety of their home’s contents, including baby blankets, cribs, carpets, toys, mattresses, clothes etc, many of which are now ruined. 620 days ago they received the initial air quality testing results from their home that showed interior air quality 344% higher than the acceptable indoor limit prescribed by Alberta Health Services. For over a year prior to the discovery of the mould, this family had suffered from chronic respiratory issues that are consistent with prolonged mould exposure, including diagnoses of acute bronchitis, asthma, and severe headaches. Alberta Health Services, Doctor’s notes, paediatrician recommendations and advice from a respiratory therapist have advised these children and family not return to the home until all appropriate measures to clean the home and its contents, and resolve any known or unknown risks to further contamination be taken. Because you NEED a home that is safe to live in. This HAS NOT been done by either of these companies. And this family is still living without a home after all this time.
The warranty provider states: “the Program has been relentlessly focused on improving homebuilder performance, professionalism, responsibility and accountability- Alberta New Home Warranty”.
It’s been shocking to witness that this family has had to engage their own professionals (at their own cost) to prove the work of the builder on claim items is inadequate, that they have submitted claim items multiple times, had items declined multiple times only to have their professionals (they had to pay for) explain the work was not done appropriately and this house has numerous deficiencies requiring attention. Where is the responsibility and accountability of these companies? Devaluing the lives of homeowners so blatantly that they refuse to address warrantable items and neglect to make the builder take responsibility and accountability for poor workmanship. They claim to be working diligently towards resolution: 620 days is not diligent. 620 days is punitive and inappropriate.
New Home Warranty has failed to provide any living out allowance to this family for 620 days. They have broken their own policy at the expense of this family and left them struggling to provide for their children. They refuse to communicate with this family who is desperately trying to ensure the home they paid for is built to their needs and expectations, forcing them to hire legal help just to get incomplete answers on THEIR OWN HOME.
Between having to pay for their home in Calgary, rent other temporary living accommodations, legal fees, consultant fees, as well as having to deal with multiple thefts of their belongings which have to be replaced, this family is in dire financial need.
As a community, we may not be able to help with the trauma they have experienced, nor the potential long-term health consequences inflicted upon them due to these companies, but this financial burden is one that I am hoping we can collectively help with.
Hopewell Residential and Alberta New Home Warranty have endangered this family and neglected their professional obligations for too long at the cost of the livelihood, happiness, security and finances of this sweet family.
If you are able, please give what you can to help this family, who continues to demonstrate kindness, generosity, love and respect to everyone despite the mistreatment they have endured. If you are unable to donate, please share their story, in hopes that it reaches the right ears and we can save this family and bring awareness to others who are undoubtedly facing this same treatment.
