With heavy hearts, we share some devastating news: Marcelino Hernández—a loving husband, devoted son, tireless worker, and dear friend—has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, specifically non-small cell lung cancer (adenocarcinoma). The tumor is located in his right lung and dangerously close to his spine, making it difficult for him to breathe, swallow, and manage the constant pain in his chest and back.

Who is Marcelino?

Marcelino is only 39 years old. He was born in Joyabaj, Quiché—a Mayan region in Guatemala—and came to the United States in 2005 in search of a better life. He has spent nearly two decades working hard in Florida, most recently as a waiter at a beachfront restaurant. He’s been married for two years and helps raise three stepchildren, forming a loving and devoted family.

Everyone who knows Marcelino knows that he is kind-hearted, humble, generous, and noble. Always ready to help others, always with a smile and a big heart. Now, he’s the one who needs our help.

Why are we asking for support?

Two years ago, after a motorcycle accident, a tumor was discovered. However, due to complications with his immigration status and lack of health insurance, he was unable to receive proper treatment at the time. Despite being in constant pain, Marcelino continued working, giving his all every day. Unfortunately, his condition has worsened, and his oncologist has confirmed that he will begin chemotherapy in two weeks.

Right now, he is unable to work and his income has dropped drastically. He’s struggling to cover basic expenses—let alone the high costs of medical treatment.
