Hey everyone,
First, I never thought I'd be in such dire straits to resort to using a platform like this; I've been working since I was 14 years old until the pandemic interrupted all of our lives. Unfortunately, as some of you may know but most don't, on Christmas Eve 2020, I was admitted to Mount Sinai Hospital in Queens with a severe infection in my leg brought on by undiagnosed diabetes. As a result, I had to have part of my left foot amputated, and suffered severe nerve damage in my leg. After nearly a month in the hospital fighting the infection that had spread into other parts of my body, I began the arduous process of rehabbing my foot, yet still developed complications involving one of the remaining toes on my foot, a setback that has prevented me from returning to work as I had hoped last fall.
While I had made a good living managing restaurants in New York City for the better part of two decades, most of those positions did not offer health benefits, so I've had diabetes for years and didn't know it until it was almost too late. I tried returning to work over the past year, but the lingering nerve damage was significantly painful, and attempting to work against my doctor's wishes likely contributed to the complications that ensued.
Thankfully, I was able to receive some governmental assistance that, while greatly appreciated, fell short of the expenses for my apartment. Moving to a more affordable space proved impossible without breaking my lease, and now that government rent moratoriums have expired, I am facing eviction for my rental arrears.
Most importantly, my foot is nearly fully healed, and my doctors say I should be able to resume my past work activities in the near future. Furthermore, the diagnosis of my diabetes was a blessing in disguise, as I have never felt better and have modified my lifestyle with healthy choices and eliminating some of the vices that contributed to my illness. At that point I will gladly return to one of the many restaurants seeking managers with my experience and proficiency. All I need is to buy myself a little time, which I will repay many times over through paying it forward to others in my position when I wake from this nightmare...
