On Tuesday, August 26th, Chuck left on a motorcycle ride to western Massachusetts. Shortly after leaving home he was struck by a car who failed to yield to oncoming traffic. The collision broke/shattered his tibia and fibula lacerating all skin on his left lower leg detaching three arteries. The wonderful trauma team at MMC was able to reconnect two of the three arteries and save Chucks lower leg. On Thursday, August 28th the fibula and tibia were replaced with rods. Chuck will also undergo skin grafting, along with follow up correction surgeries down the road. As can be imagined this injury is causing him excruciating pain. Chuck does not have disability leave through work and the family will be without his income during this extended recovery time.
The family is extremely grateful to the amazing Scarborough ME first responders, EMS, Police department and ambulance team who responded to the accident and cared for Chuck, Marietta Towing who handled the motorcycle, the trauma team at MMC, specifically Dr. Blaisdell, and all the wonderful nurses. Currently the emergent need is to ensure relief of the financial pressures of moving to a one income household, the need for home modifications to get a makeshift downstairs bedroom and modifications to the bathroom to make it accessible. We are hoping this fund will let the family focus on Chucks recovery and rehabilitation.
