I have had Alopecia since I was 12 and for as long as I can remember, I have always wanted a custom wig. My insurance has never covered the wigs, because Alopecia is considered a cosmetic need, not a medical one. My hair will probably never completely grow back and I have been wearing wigs every day since I was 12. A custom wig can run anywhere from $1500-$2500, depending on the quality of the hair, the kind of cap, length of the hair, and who makes it. I currently buy one human hair wig a year, which runs me around $800 (that's not always affordable on my teacher salary). My parents and grandparents have helped me in the past, but now I'm on my own when purchasing a new wig. I am a middle school teacher, cheerleading coach, and work retail part time. You would think working as much as I do, I would be able to afford the custom wig, but I am also in the process of paying off a hefty hospital bill for a 5-week stay at an eating disorder clinic last year, so that doesn't leave much money to save towards my dream wig. This year, I was in desperate need of a new one and had to purchase one that I didn't really like in terms of the hair color, style, cap, and overall quality. I would finally like to be able to get my dream wig that I am absolutely in love with, that looks as natural as possible (not like a wig), and I can still partake in everyday life without worrying about it falling off. As much as I hate to admit it, a lot of my self-esteem and self image is tied into my hair. The nicer my wigs, the better I feel about myself. When they don't look as good as I would like them too, I don't like leaving the house. This really would change my life in more ways than I can explain.
