Hi! I got accepted into my “stretch” school, Howard University. I am pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance. I’ve been training as a classical pianist since I was five. Of all my musical endeavors, three stand out to me: volunteering at Martha Jefferson Hospital, meeting Congressman John Lewis, and performing for Dr. Roland Wiggins.
I was a volunteer at Martha Jefferson Hospital for its music therapy program. I enjoyed playing the grand piano in the lobby while providing soothing music to patients and guests. At an annual Links’ Brunch held during the Festival of the Book, I met Congressman John Lewis. Following my performance, he came and praised my talent, and gave me his business card so we could keep in touch. My most memorable performance was for Dr. Roland Wiggins while honoring him in 2019 at the Night of Black Innovation in Music hosted by the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center. Dr. Wiggins was a jazz music theorist, who taught legends such as John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Yusef Lateef, and many more. I was fortunate enough to receive tutelage from him. I received Dr. Wiggins' only standing ovation of the evening after playing Reflections by Thelonious Monk.
Attending Howard will allow me to develop as a classical pianist. I look forward to studying at the Chadwick Boseman College of Fine Arts with your support. It costs more than $50,000 annually to attend Howard University. During the 2022-2023 school year, I will work to secure scholarships and grants for the next three years. However, this will only be possible with your support. I will keep you posted on my success.
