Prayers for Pia

Donation protected
Hello! My name is Clarissa Taylor. My mother is from the Philippines, and I grew up here in Utah. I have always admired my mother’s willingness to provide for our family back home in the Philippines. Being of the same descent, I feel very obligated to do the same, which is what I want to do for my cousin Pia.

In 2011, Jobelyn Pia Abano was diagnosed with lupus. The past couple of months however have been very detrimental to Pia's health. In April of 2020, she started to have severe insomnia which would have her awake for three days straight regardless of her use of medication. This lasted for a few months.

Due to the ongoing pandemic and an alcoholic father, Pia experienced increased anxiety. In September of this last year, she was experiencing headaches, painful joints, an upset stomach, pain around her ribs, and several seizures that would occur almost daily. Because of the drastic symptoms, her family decided to have her checked up. After visits to an optometrist, dermatologist, gastrologist, neurologist, and a rheumatologist, each running several tests, a diagnosis was finally discovered. Pia was diagnosed with tuberculosis. This explained the weight loss of eighteen kilograms.

Regardless of her treatment of tuberculosis, Pia was also experiencing intermittent fevers every morning since November 13th. Pia was later admitted to the Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu on December 8th. A lumbar spinal tap was performed to extract her cerebral spinal fluid to show that Pia was diagnosed with cryptococcosis. This condition is a rare, but fatal, fungal infection that originates from bird feces. She has been prescribed Fluconazole, which costs around 6,300 Pesos a week (150 USD).

To make matters worse, while staying in the hospital, Pia developed pneumonia. The doctor allowed her to go home for the holidays, only to have her develop hemorrhoids while staying at her cousin’s condominiums. Being readmitted to the hospital around New Years at the Chong Hua Hospital, she had blood cultures done only to find that she has markers of sepsis.

Pia’s sister, Jodette, is living in Japan and has been exhausting her savings accounts providing for her sister. Other members of her family are also dealing with other health issues and are unable to financially provide. Insurance or the Philippines government will not cover her medical bills and we are looking at other sources to help.  We are asking for your prayers and spiritual and emotional support as we support Pia!

Below are the costs of the medication listed. Pia is a very optimistic individual, and we will keep fighting for her.
