Typhoon Rai, known as Typhoon Odette, made landfall Dec 21st in the Philippines leaving disastrous conditions. This included generating wind speeds exceeding 149mph, flooding, creating landslides, and caused mass blackouts throughout the country. The typhoon has devastated several residents particularly within the province of Malabuyoc. Cebu’s southwestern municipality of Malabuyoc is completely isolated from the rest of the province and is running out of basic goods. According to the Governor, “The need is immediate because...they are running out of food and other necessities.”
Malabuyoc is completely cut off from other provinces on both ends. The bridge connecting it to the neighboring town of Ginatilan collapsed after Typhoon Odette. The national road connecting Malabuyoc from the northern part of the province also remains inaccessible to four-wheeled vehicles. Of the 4,000 houses in the municipality, about 80% have been damaged while 20% are completely destroyed. The death toll due to Typhoon Odette has reached 389, while 64 individuals are missing, and 1,146 were injured based on the latest report of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
