Help Hunter Heal – Emergency Surgery for My Niece’s Best Friend
Hello, my name is Kristal, and I’m reaching out on behalf of my niece, Katreina, and her beloved dog, Hunter. Hunter isn’t just a pet — he’s her heart, her constant companion, and truly part of our family. It’s difficult for her to ask for help, but the situation has become urgent, and I want to do everything I can to support them both during this incredibly difficult time.
Last week, Hunter became suddenly and critically ill. What first appeared to be a simple stomach issue quickly escalated into a life-threatening infection. He required emergency surgery, intensive care, and still needs ongoing medical treatment. His veterinary bills have now reached nearly $20,000 — far beyond what Katreina and Hunter's father, Matt, prepared for — and we are humbly asking for help.
On Tuesday, September 25th, Hunter stopped eating. At first, Katreina hoped it was just an upset stomach. But when things didn’t improve by the next morning, she immediately got him to the vet. After tests and initial treatment, he was sent home to rest. But the very next day, his condition worsened — he developed a high fever and was clearly in pain.
She rushed him to Bulger Animal Hospital in Lawrence, where they discovered a severe internal infection had developed and was spreading through his abdomen. He was septic — and the vet gave only a 50/50 chance of survival.
Hunter is an active, healthy, and incredibly sweet dog. He’s been Katreina’s companion through so many chapters of her life — from the barn to road trips and everywhere in between.
He was rushed into emergency surgery. The infection was flushed from his abdomen, a drain was placed, and a feeding tube inserted since he hadn’t eaten in days. He was started on IV antibiotics, fluids, and pain medications to stabilize him.
As someone who has always done everything possible for her animals, Katreina was devastated — torn between fear, guilt, and uncertainty. But she knew she had to give Hunter a fighting chance. And thankfully, that decision saved his life.
Hunter is more than just a dog to Katreina. He’s her shadow, her emotional anchor, and her best friend. She rescued him as a puppy, and since then, he’s been by her side through every major moment — including the heartbreak of losing her heart horse, Cash.
People always comment on how gentle and well-behaved Hunter is — and even during his ICU stay, the veterinary team said he was the sweetest patient. He trusted his caregivers and remained calm through everything, always showing his gentle spirit.
Thanks to expert care, Hunter is still here and still fighting. He remains in the hospital under close observation, and while there have been small improvements, he is not out of the woods yet. His care is ongoing, and every day in the ICU adds to the financial burden.
The total cost of surgery, intensive care, and continued treatment has reached nearly $20,000. I’m asking, from the bottom of my heart, that if you’re able to contribute — even a small amount — it would make a huge difference. And if you can’t donate, please consider sharing this with others who might be able to help.
Thank you for reading Hunter’s story and for supporting Katreina and her best friend during this difficult time. Every bit of kindness counts.
With heartfelt gratitude,
