While Steve was racing in Arizona, he crashed pretty hard, resulting in a broken collarbone, shoulder blade, 8 broken ribs, and also has a collapsed lung. He is in the ICU in Chandler, with his daughter Hailey by his side. We are starting this gofundme so that we are able to raise funds, as we would like to get Steve’s parents to him, and to get Hailey back home in Rhinelander. When Steve can be released, we will need to get him back home, along with his vehicle, trailer, bike, etc.
UPDATE #1: Steve was moved out of the ICU last night around 10pm. He has since been informed that he will have to have repair surgery of the collarbone to have a plate put in, being that his right side is significantly longer than the broken left side. They are able to get him in today (11/22/2023) for surgery. We may be looking at up to three weeks for his hospital stay. Steves parents are on his way to him today, and we are getting Hailey back home to Rhinelander today, also.
UPDATE #2: Steve’s collarbone surgery was successful! He is obviously in more pain, but this will make the healing process of all connecting parts much more successful. He did just have a CT scan on his ribs, they are looking into whether or not he will need to have the same plating surgery on the ribs, we will know the results/outlook by about 5 pm today. His parents are there with him, taking care of him. He is back on oxygen for a short while as of now, the chest was incredibly heavy last night and through the morning, so this is just to alleviate that a bit.
UPDATE #3: We just talked with Steve, looks like he will be in the hospital a little bit longer. They reviewed his X-rays and he will need to get some plates on his ribs. This is to assist with posture, breathing and general healing for the future. They are thinking possibly Monday for surgery but that's not confirmed yet. Prayers and phone calls to him are very appreciated!
UPDATE #4: second surgery was successful! He is in an incredible amount of pain, which is to be expected. The surgeons plated 4 ribs and aligned everything back up nicely. The incision they’d made for the surgeryis only about 5 inches, surprisingly! The healing period for this is about a month, but that does not necessarily mean he will have to remain in Arizona. Also, he had at least a quart of fluid/blood that was drained out from his lung, which I’m sure helped alleviate some of the pressure he’d been struggling with. The surgeons also noticed that portions of the rib/ribs that were broken were actually pushing anggressively against his lung, but luckily, the lung didn’t puncture again.
UPDATE #5: Steve was released from the hospital yesterday late afternoon (12/2). He and his parents will be staying with his cousin Mike and their family for the time being. The tentative plan is to drive back, as the earliest he could get the clear for flying would be at least 2 weeks, and that is with the doctors saying absolute best case scenario. So, his parents will drive them all back in Steve’s car that he’d driven there, stopping nightly to stay in a hotel to rest up. He has been assigned an internal medicine doctor in Wausau, and treatment will resume once they are back. We are thinking they will stay about a week still in AZ to heal up as much as possible before enduring the long road trip
He is also accruing extreme medical bills, he does have insurance, and the emergency services have been covered, thankfully.
Please, if you have any amount you can put forth, it would be beyond appreciated. Please also continue to share your best wishes and prayers ❤️
3/4/2024—-Update from the man himself—-
Hi everyone. I would first like to thank everyone who took the time to reach out to me during this whole ordeal, and of course donate to me for the ongoing costs. A little update on how the road is going for me so far.
I'm back to work now, a bit of light duty and taking it easy and slow as I continue to heal up. I'm going to physical therapy for my shoulder, and that is going well. I have my range of motion back, and now I'm working on building back strength. My collar bone is doing great, as well as my shoulder blade. My ribs are getting there, I think, and I'm continuing to work on building my lung capacity back up and get my stamina and breathing strength to where it was before.
I have an appointment with a rib specialist on the 14th of March, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for good news. I still struggle with tightness in my chest due to my chest wall being a bit out of shape, and there is one rib plate that is a bit concerning, but I'll know more after I go in. In the meantime I will keep working hard on getting better, getting my wind back, and stretching as much as I can to try to be back to where I was prior. Again, thank you everyone. I can't tell you how humbled I have been by everyone's generosity, love, and compassion. It truly brought me to tears to feel that kind of outpouring from everyone.
