Support Sandy's Recovery!

Dear Friends- 

This has been a challenging year for many of us weathering the Covid pandemic.  I often would tell my students that sometimes you may find yourself in a place where you need help and when that time comes you have to place your pride aside and ask for it.

So as someone that has spent a career in non-profit helping others, I now find myself in a place where I need some help. I appreciate those close to me for encouraging me to do so as this isn't easy for me. I apparently have a harder time taking care of myself than I do taking care of others.

Unfortunately, I just suffered a very bad accident that has already cost me so far about $30K+ in hospital/medical bills, and it looks to be a very long rehab & recovery. Taking apart a Murphy bed, one of the bolts snapped from the pressure of the spring loaded plate and sent a metal bar slicing right through my leg. I am absolutely lucky that no arteries were cut or I wouldn't be here today, but it sliced completely down to the bone through my hamstring, IT band, quad, and all the muscles, tissue and tendons in between. 

In any sense, I am pretty immobile and it will be a long time before I drive and hopefully run. Compounded by the fact that I have been unemployed almost since the beginning of Covid burning through savings in this expensive city, this injury could not have come at a worse time. On top of this, I broke the transverse process bone in my back at the L1 vertebrae about 10 weeks ago slipping down wet stairs taking out the trash and had just recovered from that. 

Please know that I am in good spirits and am optimistic for my recovery but there are many unknowns at this point. I am lucky to have a great girlfriend and local support network to help nurse me through this. As a veteran, I do have some limited coverage through the VA, but the reality of the long road to recovery for rehab presents many financial challenges.
