Lola, our beautiful, sassy 10 year old got diagnosed with Spindle Cell Sarcoma in November 2024. She had been limping with leg pain, but had had no trauma or no reason to limp. After many visits to the doctors and then A&E, they finally x-rayed her leg and the woman gasped when she saw how bad Lolas leg was. Her bone has completely disintegrated where the tumour had eaten away at the femur bone. She had a biopsy to confirm the type of sarcoma, but because the bone was so fragile, it resulted in her leg fracturing. We didn't know it was fractured as we were sent home on the Wednesday. Two days later, the hospital called to say they'd reviewed her scans and she was at risk of her leg fracturing. When we got back to Stanmore, the surgeon came and met us to tell us that it had fractured and they were admitting her and putting her in a full leg cast. We stayed in until the Monday, then went to UCLH via ambulance for her "work up week" where they inserted her PICC line, scans etc. On the 26th November, Lola started her chemotherapy. She has 6 rounds of chemo, each round is 5 weeks. She is an inpatient for 3 weeks and has two weeks at home to recover. Twice (so far) in her breaks, her little body has needed extra help in the form of IV antibiotics, blood and platelet transfusions. We were in having chemo all over Christmas and New Year too. In Feb, we went back to Stanmore for her surgery, this was an 8.5 hours op where they removed her femur and replaced it with a doner bone. She can't put any weight on her leg at the moment whilst the bone fuses. We go back in tomorrow for another week, this week is cycle 3C.
