Cancer at 30?

This is just one of the many questions asked when we received the diagnosis of an otherwise healthy, young and beautiful, (non smoking/no vaping/nondrug using) talented woman. The diagnosis hit us like a ton of bricks. Neuroendocrine/Typical Carcinoid Tumor in the lung.

Anyone who has ever spent the night in the hospital is aware of the cost; add to that, missed work, surgeries, travel to other hospitals, multiple doctor visits and all that comes with it, the cost is more than most average people can handle.

We are reaching out to you for help of any kind. The nearly 3 days in the hospital bills are already coming in and we are awaiting a referral to Duke for a specialist because as those who know Erika Jones know she is special in many ways. Her tumor (we call it Blanche) is in an area that cannot be simply eradicated, she may in fact have to have the entire left lung removed. At 30 years old with many more goals to reach and lives to touch she will live with one lung however this could impact the quality of life in her later years; we are seeking the guided physician’s expertise to try to save at least most of her lung.

If you go out for coffee or lunch just one day instead add that amount to this platform. What a difference a small amount can make from the many people who can see this.

Erika’s story will save lives; be an advocate for your health. If something seems wrong, see a doctor. Be clear and adamant that something is not normal. The number of young people seeing this, and other cancer diagnoses, is rising. The sooner it is caught the better your chances. We believe Blanche has been around for more than 10 years and had it not been for the wonderful care she received at an Urgent Clinic it could have kept growing or worse. Erika could have lost her life due to the collapsed lung that was caused by the blockage. Had Blanche made her way somewhere else and not caused the blockage continuing to grow another 10+ years we might not have the ability to get it out before it was too late.

Erika is known to many as the talented actress at a local Haunt in Greensboro NC – The Woods of Terror, which is well known. If you know the WOT, you know Lucy. Since Erika was 15 years old and got over her fear of haunted houses, she has worked at this one climbing the haunted ladder from a behind the scenes extra to being the right hand to the leadership of this amazing attraction – reaching ‘stardom’ with her acting talent, creativity and her exceptional design ideas creating one of the longest running midway actors they have had. You may have seen this beautiful young girl transition into a scary and yet mesmerizing creature known as Lucy – people come from all over just to be scared by her. Nothing is scarier at 30 years old than a diagnosis that will and has already changed her life.

We hope you will all join us to support Erika aka Lucy and allow her to continue to live her dreams to the fullest extent. She is a hard working, dedicated self-employed businesswoman working with an up and coming locally owned business who supports her and depends on her by day and she works just as hard as a manager, a talented actor coordinator, running social media and so many other positions with WOT. She is a band manager and photographer for her best friend/boyfriend’s local band. Her abilities are endless, and we want her to be able to continue to grow and expand her talents; with your help this is possible.

As her mother she is my heart, her family and so many others who know and love her are heartbroken this fabulous young lady has to endure this disease. As one of the founding members of a non profit Battling Life Together providing comfort packages to those fighting cancer, I am well aware of how social media, helping others and sharing a story can change lives.
