Hello.

Right now my niece. Olivia, is laying in a medically induced coma at Brigham and Women's Hospital awaiting open heart surgery to repair (or maybe replace, I am not sure) a valve damaged by bacteria. Unfortunately, there is much more to the story leading up to this point. Years ago, diagnosed with MALS, CRPS and other rare maladies, Olivia has endured excruciating pain, mobility issues, digestive problems and other illness that makes it necessary for a wheelchair to get around and a permanent feeding tube to provide nourishment. Things had recently improved for Olivia as she was attending college classes in person. Unfortunately, 10 days ago, it is believed that she caught an infection through the feeding tube port. This led to pneumonia and the need to be intubated and placed on a ventilator. At some point, doctors punctured her lung during a procedure having to do with the feeding port. ( It wasn't negligent, but a regular known possible problem during this procedure) She has spiked fevers as high as 105 and remains heavily sedated. Bacteria found in her blood attached to her heart which leads us to where we are now.

Olivia and her parents have health insurance but as you all probably know there are lots of expenses that are not covered, especially in the days and weeks of recovery that will be necessary once Olivia recovers from this dire situation.
