Harley needs your help.
If you know Harley, you know she’s a high energy, fun loving pup. In June, we noticed a dramatic behavioral change. She was lethargic and began drinking an excessive amount of water. This led to her having accidents in the house. We went to the vet thinking it was an infection. Unfortunately, it wasn’t.
We began testing Harley weekly to see what was causing this change. After about a month of testing, Harley was diagnosed with diabetes insipidus. Diabetes insipidus is an extremely rare disease that less than 1% of dogs experience. It causes fluids in the body to become unbalanced, making Harley constantly thirsty. This increase in drinking produces large amounts of urine. If untreated, it could lead to a deterioration of vital organs.
Although there is no known cure, dogs can live a healthy life with diabetes insipidus with proper treatment. Harley began the long and difficult treatment process in early August. Her thirst seemed to be under control so we thought we were on the right path.
After a few weeks Harley started having severe adverse reactions from the medication, including a complete loss of appetite. Upon further testing and consultation with our primary veterinarian, it was determined Harley would need to be hospitalized.
On Saturday September 7th, we admitted Harley to Green Acres Veterinary Hospital in Buffalo. There she is receiving 24 hour care in the ICU. Internal medicine specialists are working with her to determine a treatment path that will allow her to return home.
We ask that if you’re able to, please help us bring our Harley Bear home. If you’re unable to we understand and ask that you keep us in your prayers during this difficult time.
