Hello Friends,
I am writing to ask for help in purchasing 11 sewing machines and basic sewing tools for our Meany Middle School Sewing Club. I started the club in the Fall and had a great response from students. We currently have 21 students signed up and plan to split into two groups to fit everyone in.
In the Fall we worked on hand sewing and cutting projects, but the kids are ready to move on to machine sewing and working with patterns.
The Meany administration has been very supportive of our club, but Seattle Public Schools have no funds for extracurricular activities like this. Parents and friends have donated fabric, notions and supplies and (amazing!) parents have volunteered during our meetings. Now we just need our machines.
It is very important to me that this club is free for our students. Meany is a diverse school with students from all income levels and access to materials. Home-Ec, Machine Shop, and Industrial Arts were all offered in my public junior high in the 80’s. These free classes gave us a place to be creative, use our hands, and get a glimpse into possible careers. They helped us value the trades and gave us a place to succeed if academics were a struggle. I hope our club can fulfill a similar purpose for our students.
Please help support our sewing club.
Sincerely
Camilla Eckersley
