❤️ Help for Matthias ❤️

Labor Day, 2023, was a day meant for appreciating the working force with rest and relaxation. However, for a special little boy, Matthias Anthony, and his family, it was going to anything but relaxing as Matty was to be tasked with the biggest fight for his life.

The weekend left him resting with headache, nausea, and fever, suspected as standard viral symptoms managed. Saturday, he seemed to be getting better, but by Monday he had lost control of his right leg and had what appeared to be a seizure. He was immediately rushed to the ER. Matty continued downhill, struggling to speak and his headache becoming unbearable. A CT scan revealed a mass in his brain. He needed an MRI with haste, so he was rushed via lights and sirens to Banner UMC where an infectious abscess was discovered extending from deep in his sinus into a large portion of his brain.

Within hours Matthias was in the OR with a team of neurosurgeons, ENTs, and infectious disease doctors, all teaming up together for this anomaly. He endured 7 hours on the operating table. It was revealed in surgery that much of the infection was fibrous; coagulated and branching through his brain tissue as a solid. A type of infection that cannot safely be removed physically, but requires the assistance of long-term antibiotics.

As of this initial sharing, Matthias is in a drug induced state of paralysis and sedation to allow his body to put all its energy and resources into healing his brain with as little long-term damage as possible.

Matty is fighting for his life, and what a fighter he is, because against all odds, he made it through the first night and has maintained stable vitals since. We pray this trend continues so he can begin the awakening process on Saturday and see what long-term recovery goals look like.

Matty is an extremely bright boy with a love for all things science and engineering. If Matty could talk right now, he would be asking when he can get back to coding, drawing, playing Roblox, his doggies, rock climbing, and just geeking out with his best friends and cousins. He would also tell his mom and dad that everything is going to be okay, because that’s just the calm and reassuring presence he embodies.

With that spirit, we want to try and help his family know they are okay. The amount of loving support from family and friends has been moving, and they see the effects of that love on his healing daily. If you are able to donate anything at all, please consider contributing to help his family alleviate the financial strain this circumstance has shouldered them with.

This Labor Day proved difficult for one child and his family, but it’s these suffered moments that can show the contrasted love and light all around us. Our hearts break knowing Matthias was the recipient of life’s seemingly unfair dealings, but his journey is a vehicle to show the importance of love in this life. The importance of community and loving force it emanates. It’s that force that matters, and if you can spread that gift today with anyone, please do: Tell your babies your love them, smile at a stranger, call up that friend on your heart.

Matthias means “Gift of God,” and so we ask you to share your gift with this world to keep it bright. After all, that’s God’s gift in you.
