Shoebur is originally from India but studied medicine in Iran for 10 years before having to flee the country. He arrived in Australia as a refugee where his medical credentials would not be recognised. He was however successful in obtaining study and work rights as part of his visa conditions.
As well as finding employment Shoebur successfully enrolled into an undergraduate Podiatry degree and fully self funded his first year and a half of study. During his first year of study Shoebur suffered a stroke which required time away from both study and work. Despite this setback Shoebur returned to University and has passed all requirements for the first 3 semesters of his degree.
Unfortunately, unable to continue to work and study Shoebur ran out of funds. Given he was no longer able to pay upfront for the rest of his degree (international students are not eligible for HECS or student loans), he stopped going to University and as a result his enrolment was cancelled. In order to have his University enrolment re-instated, Shoebur must be able to continue to self fund his degree until such time as his visa application makes its way thorugh the legal system. This will require a not insiginifcant amount of money!
Much work has been done by many people to get Shoebur back to full time study so that he may realise his ambition of becoming a Podiatrist. However the biggest hurdle now is ensuring sufficient funds for Shoebur to either fully or partly pay for the rest of his degree. This is where we hope the Podiatry community can assist!
Whilst we continue to pursue scholarship and other financial support options for Shoebur, we would dearly love to raise some money in the first instance to ensure speedy re-enrolment to University. If, as a member of the Podiatry community or any Podiatry related industry, you can donate any sum of money big or small towards this fantastic cause I can assure you that all monies raised will go directly towards the cost of Shoeburs degree.
Podiatrists have done and continue to do many great things. I hope you will see this as another opportunity to do something great.
