On Saturday, July 24th our sweet little Wendell was involved in a farm accident. He suffered severe injuries to his head and neck, in which his carotid artery and trachea were severed. The team at Conway Regional were miraculously able to intubate him. The medical flight team delivered him to Arkansas Children's Hospital, fighting the entire way to keep him with us. The surgical team worked tirelessly to repair his artery and trachea. So many talented, determined people saved our guy!
Extensive testing revealed that the trauma, blood loss, and undetermined amount of time he was without oxygen, caused multiple blood clots in his brain. This resulted in several TIA or "mini" strokes. He has two skull fractures, along with a myriad of other injuries. The repair to his artery and trachea are fragile and he has to be handled with the utmost of care. Once those repairs have become stronger, they can begin to determine the scope of his other injuries including the impact of the strokes. He and his family are, at the very least, going to experience an extensive hospital stay along with undetermined amounts of recovery/therapy and expenses.
We have all the faith in the world that ACH will do everything they can to give him a fighting chance!
At this time the future is uncertain. There are so many unknowns.
