A Little Help From Our Friends

Photo #1: My dad, Frank Branchek, in his boot and crutches, a staple for over three years now.
Photo #2: Graphic, but my dad's foot, far from the average foot.

The cover and third photo is of my family. Well, some of my family. Believe it or not, there's a couple missing here. Seven children. Our incredible parents spent the majority of their lives raising seven children. And while all that time was never dull or boring, always loud, consistently wild and so much fun, it was anything but easy.
When I was in 6th grade, my mom, Lisa, was diagnosed with Crohn's disease. Out of work, in and out of the hospital, in and out of remission, and yet, I watched my parents make it work.
One year later, my dad, Frank, was hit by an unlicensed, uninsured driver, resulting in a car accident that nearly killed him, left him unable to work, permanently disabled, and without an income for several years, draining their retirement savings to put food on the table. And yet, I watched my parents make it work.
Don't get me wrong, I knew it was a struggle. It was stressful, but like always, they made it work.
Which brings us to today. A pandemic creating even more financial hardship, and life has a knack for bad timing. Our dad is still dealing with complications from the accident. Extensive nerve damage has caused Charcot Foot, a disease that creates weakening and breaking of the bones leading to issues in the joints and eventually, foot deformity.
Our dad needs a painstakingly difficult, emergency surgery to reconstruct his entire foot. The chances of him losing his foot are high. Too high. Best-case scenario, he is out of part-time work for at least six months, receiving in-house rehabilitation to relearn how to walk on a newly reconstructed foot. Worst-case scenario, he loses his foot. This outcome has a lot of loose ends, and we're all still figuring these out.
So the kids, all adults ourselves now, come together to make it work, which we learned from our parents over all these years. Resilience. But we're afraid it won't be enough. We're afraid of the worst-case scenario, as if our parents haven't already been living it. And so we are swallowing our pride and wearing our humility on our sleeves and asking for a little help from our social media friends and family. A backup. Some extra. Anything that could make this time less stressful for our parents with living and medical costs.
We know that during this time, asking for a little is asking for a lot. Thank you so much in advance to anyone who donates or sends positive vibes our way. Both are deeply appreciated. We can feel the love already.
