I recently learned that my housekeeper’s daughter, Mia, was diagnosed with kidney cancer at the age of six this summer. I was horrified and shocked. To have your whole childhood ripped away by cancer is so incredibly sad and unfair. I can only imagine what Mia must have felt when, on July 26th, she was told that she had a malignant tumor the size of her abdomen spreading through her body. Mia is now on Chemo weekly in addition to having surgery to remove the tumor and her kidney, and is planning to start radiation treatment soon. Chemotherapy and radiation take an enormous physical and emotional toll on all patients, including adults, and as a child, Mia’s treatment is so much more taxing. Additionally, cancer treatment presents a difficult financial challenge to all patients and their families, 62 percent of which reported being in debt due to treatment. This is a risk for Mia's family, as her mom, Loida, who cleans houses for a living, has no choice but to stay at home and care for her daughter.
