Amanda's Battle Against Cancer

When you move home to change your life around, to start fresh, to get healthy, to become closer to family, to leave all the bad and the ugly behind... you find out you have cancer. You get smacked in the face with the big “C” word. At 31 years old, you don’t expect to hear those words.. “You have cancer”.

Yet, that is exactly what has happened to our daughter, our sister, our aunt, our friend.  Amanda  Dix has been diagnosed with Stage IV Colon Cancer.  A disease that she will have the rest of her life!  A disease she is determined to face head on and fight!  There are two major financial issues that are impacting Amanda's life which she needs help with.

A little background how this all came about...Amanda started having stomach pains back in September. In October the pain got so bad that she took herself to the hospital.  They did a CT scan and noticed “scaring” in her colon and they concluded it was probably colitis, but she needed to see a GI specialist.

Unfortunately, she was not able to see a doctor before her move back to California in November.  Once back home she had to find a primary physician first and then get a referral for a GI specialist.

She finally got scheduled for a colonoscopy on January 8th.  Amanda started the prep for procedure and instead of having bowel activity she got terrible stomach pains and started vomiting.  Called her doctor and she was told to go straight to the emergency room.  They did another CT scan and decided to do a “mini” colonoscopy.  However, they could not get the probe past the area where the scaring was, so they scheduled her for surgery.  We were told it was most likely scar tissue, though there was a less than 3% chance it could be cancer.

After,  3 1/2 hours of surgery the doctor came out and told us she removed 8 inches of Amanda’s colon and that she had stage IV colon cancer.  The cancer formed in her gland rather then from polyps, another rare form of cancer.  Additionally, the cancer had spread across her abdominal wall.  Needless to say, heartbreaking news!

We are just starting to understand what’s all involved in fighting the beast! Lots of time, love, support and expense. And this is where we need your help.

First,  Amanda took a leave of absence from her job in Seattle so she could move home to be close to her family.  Thankfully, she was able to enroll in her company's COBRA medical plan. The problem is she won't be able to work for several months, or longer and her insurance premium is about $550/month. In addition, she'll need to meet her max  medical out-of-pocket expense of $5,000 before insurance starts paying 100%.

Second, because the Chemotherapy medicine will likely destroy or damage her ovaries, she has decided to have her eggs harvested and preserved in the hopes that she can carry a child someday in the future. This is an expensive process that will cost her approximately $15,000.

If you are able to donate any money to help Amanda in her fight against cancer and help with her growing medical bills, it will be HUGELY appreciated!  Your generous donation will  help her on the road to beating her cancer.

With that being said, the  most important thing you can do to help is keep Amanda in your prayer's and send her positive energy and thoughts.

With our gratitude and appreciation,

Amanda's Support Team
