Hey friends! As many of you know and for those that don’t, my friend Dave Hernandez was diagnosed with cancer, Multiple Myeloma, this past July. This type of cancer attacks the vertebrae which causes the vertebrae to flatten. Due to his spine being unstable he elicited to go in for a back surgery where they take bone cement to help build up that broken down vertebrae. The next step after this surgery was to get Dave ready for his bone marrow transplant to help him fight cancer. On November 12th he had to travel to Scripps Hospital located in San Diego due to there not being a bone marrow facility here in Las Vegas. Upon him getting admitted in at Scripps Hospital in San Diego, the bone cement from his surgery ended up moving where it was pushing on his spinal cord which lead unforeseen issue once he got back to Las Vegas. With his treatment taking place out of state his wife and son traveled back and forth numerous times to San Diego to be by his side during the tough times of his cancer treatment and the bone marrow transplant. On December 23rd Dave was able to come home and be with his family for Christmas due to great improvements with his cancer. The unforeseen issues from the cement going into his spinal cord started to cause numbness and tingling during his last days in California but really arose when he returned back home. He was taken to Mountain View Hospital where he had emergency back surgery. A lot of screws were put in place along with rebuilding back up his vertebrae to help stabilize his back. He is currently recovering at the hospital and his next step is to transfer to a rehab facility to rebuild his strength. With a lot of prayers and love from family and friends Dave has been successful during his journey and has kept his spirits high. As you could imagine 3 surgeries along with 3 hospital stays and a stay in a rehab facility has caused a lot of unforeseen hospital bills that the family was not financially anticipating.
