Update: You all helped me reach this goal in under a day!!!! You are all wonderful people, thank you a million times over again for your donations, I can’t even put into words how kind of a gesture this is. Kitty’s surgery has been scheduled for this Tuesday, 5/20! I can’t wait to see her as her best self, pain-free. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers, I don’t know her health history so I’m praying that everything goes well! ❤️
Please help me save this sweet kitty by contributing to her mandatory medical care!
In Feb, I was at Trader Joe’s in Pt. Loma putting groceries away in my trunk when this sweet girl popped out of the bushes and demanded pets from me. After spending couple of minutes with her, I tried to walk away she followed me and it just broke my heart. It was dark out and I knew the next day there’d be cars all over for the school drop-off on that corner. I wasn’t sure what to do because my dog has not been socialized with cats but I also knew I couldn’t leave her there so I ran home, grabbed my dog’s old puppy carrier and came back for her. As I parked, she came running out again as is she had been waiting for me to come back and save her.
The next day I took her to get scanned and she was not chipped. I took her back in for a wellness check a couple days later and the vet confirmed that she was a spayed girl that was between 3-5yrs old and noticed her ear was clipped, deeming her a “Community Cat” so she had likely been on the street for a minimum of some months. He vocalized that she was the most gentle stray he had ever seen and she seemed to be in generally good health except for her teeth. There had been some trauma to her upper canines (broken off and rotting). He said if she doesn’t get them extracted, she will end up dying from periodontal disease and that’s a very slow and painful way for animals to go. It starts to poison their organs and one by one, they start to shut down. Awful. My heart sunk after I left the vet with a 1.1k-2.6k estimate. I’m a single income household with a 90lb pet of my own.
Knowing I could not keep her long term, I had already posted about her the night I found her and generated a lot of interest if she wasn’t chipped. But the second I mentioned that I found out she had teeth issues, everyone backed out almost immediately. I started calling around to see what I could do.
The wildfires in LA had just happened in the weeks prior and the SD Humane Society were way over capacity. They recommended I put her back where I found her. I said I didn’t feel this was right knowing that she required medical attention in order to live and because she’s not feral at all- that she’s extremely friendly and immediately knew how to use a litter box so she must have had a home at some point. So they recommended I call around to the rescues instead but the rescues were only taking surrenders, no strays.
Over the course of the next couple of months, I had spent hours on the phone with more rescues and the humane society begging for someone to take her on without success. I finally did get in touch with the right dept of the Humane Society only to find out that they don’t have dental suites yet so they cannot provide that kind of care, even if they wanted to.
After two months of this, it started to become pretty clear that I wasn’t going to get her the help she needed and would have to privately fundraise for her medical needs.
I found out about MexiVet Express from a kind stranger on NextDoor who had been in a similar position in the past. After exhausting all other options, they have quoted me approximately $700 (see screenshot of text) in the essential care for her dental and general health since she came off the streets (that price excludes the after care and meds, which I plan on funding myself).
It’s definitely time, I am starting to see signs of pain in her (eating less of her hard food and her jaw chatters every time she opens and closes it).
So little kitty girl is finally going to get her surgery, with your help! Please consider donating to her care so she can get the medical attention she desperately needs. She still has a lot of life to live!
Once she’s all fixed up, I see no reason why I won’t be able to find her a forever home! She has been failed in life and deserves a warm home full of love because she has a whole lot to give despite what she’s been through. ❤️ I wish I could keep her myself but my dog doesn’t respect her boundaries and that keeps her isolated to my spare bedroom which isn’t fair to her.
If you’ve made it this far, thank you so much for your time! Let’s save this girl and make sure she gets the life she deserves! Any amount helps!
