Meet Evan. He needs our help to seek asylum in the United States. He’s a teenager who can’t afford lawyers or even the transportation he needs to meet with them. Please read his story and give.

Un poco.
A little.

It’s a good answer for a lot of questions when you’re 16 and being asked about coming to Virginia to seek asylum from Guatemala and the town where your father was murdered.

Evan has a shy smile and a shiny green jacket and sits with his hands under his legs. He’s been in the States since September and spent 15 days in a detention center in El Paso before he could come live with his older brother in Glasgow.

Was the walk to get to America scary?
Un poco.

He walked a week to get to Mexico from his town of 60 houses, and then five more days to the US-Mexico border. Of 20 people, he was the youngest, then 15.

Were you the star of the group?
For this question, the shy smile is his answer.

When the police questioned you after you crossed the Rio Grande, was it frightening?
Un poco.

A circling helicopter spotted his group in the river, and the police came. They questioned him in Spanish, and then he was off to the detention center.

Evan seems to understand that he’s being asked about his trip so his story can be told – so that people who would give money to help immigrants like him navigate our legal system can meet him and understand why he’s here, and not in Guatemala, where his mother still is.

Are you getting used to Rockbridge County High School? Un poco.
What’s difficult?
English, and math.
How many friends do you have?
Two.

His English is un poco, too, so we go slowly, but he’s nervous and never really relaxes. He does smile.

Who decided that you would come to America?
I did – after they killed my father in front of me and said they would kill me, too, because I saw them.
Did you know who they were?
No, they wore covers around their faces.
Did you know why?
No.
Do you know what asylum is?
No. But my brother told me.
