Silas Martin - 5 yr old, lawn mower accident
Donation protected
My nephew Silas is an incredibly smart, happy, loving, and full of life 5 year old boy who was tragically in a lawn mower accident on Saturday, June 6, 2020. That night he was first taken to a hospital in Lewistown where he was stabilized for transport via an ambulance to Hershey Medical Center. Once at Hershey he underwent a 4-5 hour surgery to clean and try to repair his right foot. The result of the surgery was a successfully attached pinkie toe and the toe next to it. His heel was pinned on, and he lost his remaining three toes and a part of his foot behind the big toe. Due to the hot blades of the mower the wounds were cauterized which helped with bleeding but not with healthy skin that was needed to close the wound. As a result there was a lot of missing skin and the wound was left open after surgery. On Sunday, June 7th Silas received a blood transfusion. On Wednesday, June 10th, Silas was scheduled for another surgery where doctors would take off the bandages and decide what needed to be done with his foot. Due to the lack of skin and circulation in the foot, Silas had his foot amputated six inches above his ankle. He was placed in a hard cast which he will wear for six weeks. He has two ports in his leg where local anesthetics are pumped directly into the leg via a pump. He is also rotating on Tylenol and Motrin regularly to aid in pain relief. On Friday, June 12th Silas was allowed to come home.
After six weeks Silas will be fitted for a prosthetic. He will need significant physical therapy and a few more surgeries in the future as his leg continues to grow. He will also need several prosthetics as he grows into adulthood.
We are so very thankful that he will be “ok”. He is a strong little boy who I know will face any challenges head on that he may have. His mother is a stay at home mom, his father works for a small business where he provides restoration estimates, and he has a 9 month old baby sister. His father does not have good insurance for Silas’ and the family will face the burden of substantial medical bills. Please consider helping this family whether it be in donation or keeping them in your thoughts and prayers. Thank-you.
