Wiggles Hit By Car Fund

Donation protected
Wiggles is a cat that was adopted by two veterinary students from the Cayman Island Humane Society and has been their cat for the past ~2 years as they go to St. Matthew's University School of Veterinary Medicine in Grand Cayman. He and his littermate, BamBam, were both in the shelter for 2 years prior to their adoption and were very excited and appreciative to have a new home away from the shelter when they were chosen. The two male cats are used multiple times a semester for different veterinary teaching courses including clinical skills courses, imaging courses, and others that require live pets, and they have been teaching pets for nearly their entire length of ownership. Through these teaching opportunities the two cats have created quite a following and great relationships with students.

The two of them live both inside and outside and never tend to stray far from home, but really enjoy getting outside and exercising. Their length of time outside is rarely as long as a day, and never exceeds 24 hours between visits home. Naturally the two students that own the cat were concerned when Wiggles didn't show up for a couple of days on 10/18. After a weekend of the owners being worried sick, Wiggles miraculously returned home after having been missing for 4.5 days.

The students rushed home to find him dehydrated, weak, and with a large, gangrenous cut on one of his hind legs as a friend and fellow veterinary student had found him and called hastily. They quickly rushed him to the hospital where they realized that he might also have a fracture of his other hind leg. After a couple of days in the hospital Wiggles has recovering from wound debridement surgery on his one hind limb that had a necrotic gash and is gearing up to undergo an orthopedic repair of his broken left femur.

The owners can't bear to give up on him as he had not given up on himself or them over the four days he was missing. So he is undergoing these treatments and being hospitalized in the meantime, all the while concerning his owners as they hope he recovers fully and quickly, as well as hoping he returns to his usual playful, energetic, and talkative self.

These two veterinary students are in a very tight financial situation as they are in the middle of paying for their veterinary education. As future veterinarians these two are first and foremost advocates for proper animal welfare and health. The concern, care, and love these two have for all animals, and especially their pets is immeasurable and it is difficult for them to give up on a loved one simply due to financial limitations. The fracture repair surgery needed for Wiggles is not inexpensive but unfortunately is required for proper treatment of his wounds and most importantly, correct animal welfare.

If you would like to donate money to the cause for this wonderful cat please feel free to donate on this site. Any amount of money will be helpful and will be greatly appreciated, not only by the owners, Wiggles, and his brother BamBam, but also by the veterinary students that have built a relationship with him over the past couple years. The owners will forever feel indebted to all individuals and groups that assist in this cause.

*It is important to note that all the SMU family that has so far donated money to Wiggles' cause need not consider donating any more as we realize how tight money is for students (and any body else living on an island). The fundraiser event done on Wednesday 10/23 was an exceptional effort by everybody and our appreciation for everyone's kindness is immense and incredible. Thank you for your support and we hope to have Wiggles back to his usual self in no time.

Please, even if you can't donate, share for the cause on any and all social media.

Thank you very much!
