On Christmas Eve I got a call from my moms boyfriend exclaiming that my mom was on life support after choking. The details weren't clear so we called the hospital and they told us that she was in the ICU, unconscious. My sister, dad and myself got a ticket as soon as possible so we flew down to Miami Christmas evening. After 30 minutes of seeing my mom in an unconscious state, a doctor took me aside to explain the situation. She was out to dinner and had gone into cardiac arrest, while simultaneously choking on a large piece of shrimp. The shrimp got lodged all the way into her lung. There were two surgeries to take the shrimp out of her lung. Which wasn't a complete success. The main issue, however, was the lack of oxygen to her brain, it took 30 minutes to find her pulse, and she lacked oxygen to the brain for 2 hours, resulting in serious brain damage. The doctor went on to explain that there was a slim chance of her surviving and waking up, and if she woke up from her unconscious state she would be in a vegetative state. After running numerous tests to see the exact results about her brain damage, we found out she would have to live a life in a hospital, living off of tubes, eating though tubes, and never able to function as a person again, especially the person she once was.
