What I am hoping to do is raise the money needed for one well made bass that will last me all the way through University and hopefully Grad School, too. I've scoured around for an instrument that will do this within reason.
5-String Christopher DB303
The instrument, to make as a 5 string, would be about $3200. Why a 5 string: To complete my training, a double bass player will need to be able to play the contra notes below a bass' standard low open E, as many orchestrations are written for a 'cello low open C, with the bass being an octave below. The two ways to play these notes is with either a C Extension or a 5th string, and my hands have so far found the 5th string more practical. In terms of cost, adding a C Extension to an existing bass is only marginally less expensive.
The instrument I'm setting my sights on is a great deal, considering it has rivaled instruments well over twice its price. I have played one before and know it will serve me quite well.
So, think about supporting the arts, today and tomorrow, in terms of music that I will learn and pass on to my future students as a music teacher.
