Access Ramp for Walter & Simonne's Home
Donation protected
This is 100% not-about-me. It is a heartfelt act given to someone who has difficulty asking for help. This fundraiser is about safe access for Simonne and Walter With permission and in Simonne's own words.
"My hubby, Walter, became wheelchair-bound 10 years ago after a freak illness. The illness and loss of income coupled with my expenses of multiple cancers, in a few years took all the savings we had. We have lived in a wheelchair-renovated rental for the past 7 years. We knew the owners would eventually take back the house Given our unknown needs at the time took the current rental house and it has worked well for us. The owners gave us over 1 1/2 years' notice that we needed to be out by Feb 2024. I have tried to find a rental that could work for us….every.single.day, for 1 &1/2 years, I looked. Nothing! Then, we decided to pivot to "home ownership" so we would not become homeless. We are closing on a house in Oakland on the 18th of August. It will take everything we currently have to pay the down payment. The house needs a ramp and a few more modifications. The ramp is the big expense. We have exhausted the grant program through Alpha One, in previous homes, and donated our ramp, when we moved to our rental. We didn’t need it and couldn’t afford to store it. The cost of ramps has gone up considerably! I want to make sure that Walter has what he needs. Walter never asks for anything! We have access to a loan program but honestly, that, on top of all we have to do to close is daunting! We have a company ready to go with a ramp for us. Now we need to get across the finish line. If you know me, I don’t like to ask for help. My friend Nancy asked if she could set up a gofundme account and I was touched by her kindness and willingness to help. I know we are not alone in all kinds of struggles. We appreciate all of the support whether monetarily or sending good energy to us! Thank you!!
