I’d like you to meet Rachel. A woman who, for years, was subjected to daily abuse—physical, mental, emotional, financial. Imagine rape at home, every day. Imagine that, at some point, he started bringing his friends, who raped her, too. For years. Imagine not sleeping at night, or during the days. And imagine, going through all this completely alone.

And then you might ask, why didn't she run away? I asked. And she did, several times. Each time, he found her, and she ended up in the hospital with broken bones. You might ask, where were the police? Well, when she finally got a restraining order and it expired, she asked for an extension. The police notified her that since he didn't violate the order, they saw no reason to extend and her request was denied. I'll spare you from what happened when he came home, but she almost didn't survive. You might ask, does she not have a family? Rachel is coming from a family where a dead woman is better than a divorced one. When she finally managed to get divorced, her family and community turned their backs on her. How was she able to get divorced after all? She fought with everything she had, but it came at a great cost. To keep custody of her children, she gave up everything the family owned and withdrew her police report. Imagine being thrown to the street with nothing to eat and no place to go, and to be completely alone.

But Rachel didn't give up. She worked around the clock at three jobs, got education, and slowly, built a new home for herself and her kids. Last year, due to surgery and medical situation, she fell behind on living expenses and got into debt.

I met Rachel during community work and was so inspired by her character that I created a campaign to raise money for her. When I asked Rachel if I could raise money on her behalf, she asked me in a very honest voice, what made me think people would want to help. I told her that even though she mostly experienced harm in her life, there was also a lot of goodness and good people in the world. Since then, Rachel went back to part-time work, but the fear of finding herself in the streets again reminds her of the horror she has been through and makes it difficult for her to get back on her feet. Since February 2023, I’ve been raising money to help close the housing debt that accumulated during her illness. I'm in close contact with Rachel and the professional mental health provider who supports Rachel, but we need help.
