For my dear friend Martha.
Ten years ago, while I travelled throughout Kenya, Martha took me in and welcomed me into her life. She created a home for me in a place I had never been, and showed herself to be one of the most loving and influential women I have had the privilege of meeting. She became family to me.
Over the years, Martha and I have remained close, and stay in regular contact. I have watched my dear friend become victim of crimes tragic beyond words. These challenges within her life humble me to the core. Challenges which Martha would not be comfortable for me to speak on. Just know, life in Kenya is not easy. Her courage and strength are inspiring to say the least and it amazes me everyday.
Recently, Martha has become the single mother of a beautiful baby girl. Martha named her Siobhan Mary Wanjiru, and my mother and I were honoured to have been her namesakes.
Prior to the birth of Siobhan in November, Martha was working as a elementary school teacher in Kenya. She is educated and works incredibly hard caring for and educating the children in her community. She was making the equivalent of about $130 USD a month and managing on her own with a very tight budget. With the upcoming arrival of a baby, things were starting to look grim financially as a single mother in Kenya.
To cause further stress, she developed health problems along with her pregnancy and was put on bed rest and unable to continue to teach. Without being able to work she lost her financial independence and the chance of saving in preparation of her new baby.
Despite her health issues, followed by an emergency cesarean, we were all so thankful when Siobhan was born healthy and beautiful!!
Martha's sister has taken her in while she has been recovering, getting her strength back and taking on her new role as a mother. But Martha can't stay with her sister forever. She will need to go back to work as a single mother and find a home of their own. She wants nothing more than to get back on her feet, back in the classroom, and to start her new life with her baby girl, but she needs help.
As a friend to Martha, I am organizing this fundraiser for her and her baby. On a prayer, a hope and my faith in the spirit of human kindness, I am asking for your help to make a difference in their future. Our pocket change can create bigger change than you can imagine in this woman's life. Please help this courageous woman and dear friend of mine get back on her feet, and help get little Siobhan's life off to a good start with a bright future.
Money raised will go towards:
Costs of Living and basic human needs.
School for Siobhan: Education in Kenya is not free, and even elementary students have to pay for school.
I know it may feel strange to donate to someone you have never met, but know that Martha is a sister to me, an amazing woman, full of kindness and love, and she needs our help. All I want for the holidays is for her and her beautiful daughter to feel hope and know everything is finally going to be alright.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your donations. With each donation, a tear is brought to my eye knowing it's one step closer to giving this wonderful & inspiring mother and her child a better life.
With the biggest & warmest of hearts,
together we can make change.
