Poppy’s Memorial

Sherman "Poppy" "Michael" Maurice Cannon was born on August 30, 1950, in South Bend, Indiana. He spent much of his childhood in Kansas City, MO, where his mother, Geraldine Harmon, raised him among the family and his maternal grandmother. He later moved to Pomona, CA, where he finished High School at Garey High. Poppy served in the United States Air Force as a pilot and Aircraft mechanic. He served two tours in Vietnam and spent time on base in Germany. He eventually began working for Lockheed Martin, where he made “mischievous toys for the government,” and retired after 40 years after receiving many prestigious and international industry awards. He loved all things airplanes and enjoyed many an airshow. Poppy loved to cook and was well known for his fantastic BBQ and smoked meats. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and even raced them a time or two. He adored classic cars and had his own Gatsby vehicle he called “baby.” Poppy loved to travel and always said he had put “a million miles under his belt.” He was an avid Godzilla fan and had seen every film multiple times. He had a wicked sense of humor and a laugh that was contagious. Sherman passed away on October 14, 2023. His wife, Irena Cannon, preceded him in death on July 07, 2003. Sherman is survived by his daughters Mercedes Cannon-Tran and Dominique Pendleton, his partner Lisa Williams, his grandchildren, his family, his extended family, and his many loyal friends.
