Hi. My name is Julie and I am married with a 14 month old daughter.  I was born with hydrocephalus and had to have a shunt put in very young. I had my first shunt for 24  years, which they normally dont last that long. In 2013, one month after I got married, my shunt failed and I had to have it replaced. That was a successful surgery praise the lord. In June of this year (2015) I had a strange pain in my shunt and decided to call my neurosurgeon. That would be the beginning of a very long, stressful few weeks. My neurosurgeon told me my shunt had failed after he checked it and told me i needed surgery right away. My husband was with me and my mom had our daughter. We went straight to the hospital and checked in and they prepped me for surgery. From there I have no memory of what happened for about a week and a half time span. the first surgery they tried a new process of draining the fluid off of my brain where I would be shunt free. I went home after that surgery thinking things were fine . Well I had too much fluid trying to go thru a small opening and it would not keep up with it and it started leaking out of my head. I know gross.  My husband said he tried waking me up to go to bed because I was laying on the couch. He said I just stared at him and would not respond. I was having a seizure. So he called 911 and from there i was put into icu and they did another surgery and they put an external drain to drain the fluid off of my brain. In that time I got an infection and was monitored closely. all this time i could not have contact with my daughter bc i was in ICU. I laid in the hospital not knowing what would happen next if I would even live to see the next day. My husband and I both worked and still work full time as well as take care of our daugher but the bills just keep piling up and with our wages we cant pay the over $30000 in medical bills even after insurance paid. most of this being to the surgeon and hospital because I was in ICU.
