Hi, my name is Shahid Samuels. I am from the small town of Black River in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica where Hurricane Melissa has left severe devastation. Among those affected is my grandmother Ms. Yvonne Gayle, the matriarch of our family. Our family home located in Black River, was built 19 years ago with the help of my Uncle. It has suffered severe roof damage and flooding. With no power, water, internet, and very limited resources, my family is in urgent need of help.
About the Family
Ms. Yvonne is a retired, widowed mother of 7 and grandmother to 15. Our home has always been the heart of the family, a place where relatives, friends, in-laws, return every holiday to celebrate and create memories. Myself, my cousins, and siblings were all raised there. Currently there are 8 family members living in the house who are all leaning on each other.
Current Situation
In the past 72 hours, we’ve gotten very brief contact twice. Here are the updates we’ve managed to get so far:
- Only a small portion of the roof remains
- There is still light rain so the family has managed to get 2 tarps for temporary coverage
- No electricity or running water
- Extensive furniture damage
- Internet service is none existent
How Your Donations Will Help
We are aiming to raise funds to help the Gayle family and others in the community recover and rebuild:
- Immediate food and basic supplies
For example: Generators, Mosquito Repellents, Batteries and Flashlight, Kerosene Lamps, bedding and blankets, etc
- Cleanup supplies
- Tools & Equipment
- Home repairs, including roof replacement
- Water tank replacement
- Additional recovery support for family members in surrounding areas (Newtown, Middle Quarters, and White Hall District)
