The day before her 27th birthday, Veronica was involved in a single-vehicle car accident.
It was a hot summer day. The temperature was over 100 degrees, and the fan/air conditioner in Veronica's Honda wasn't functioning. She was driving home from work, driver's side window open so she could take advantage of the breeze. It started to rain. Veronica decided to take the back roads home instead of jumping on the highway. She knew that roads are super slick during the first 30 minutes of rain. She wanted to avoid people driving recklessly.
The road Veronica took was winding. She was almost to town when she approached a tight, blind curve. As she moved through the curve, she saw a vehicle that looked like it was going to cross over the center line into her lane. Veronica tried to adjust her position in her lane in order to avoid a potential collision.
Suddenly, Veronica's tires lost traction. According to Veronica's memory and witness reports, Veronica's car spun, hit an embankment, and went airborne. The car flipped once in the air. Then it hit the ground and rolled again. The vehicle landed on its wheels, spun again, then came to a stop.
Inside the vehicle, Veronica said all that flashed through her mind were the faces of her loved ones and the fear that she would never see them again.
When the car settled, Veronica's foot was still on the brake. The engine was still running. Veronica looked up and saw that the windshield was smashed. She started to shake. She remembered that the car was still in drive, so she threw it into park. The shaking increased. She realized something was wrong with her left arm. Still in a daze, she used her right hand to pick up her left arm and place it on the door armrest. Veronica saw a woman running towards the Honda. Veronica looked down at her arm.
She saw the blood. She saw her bone. And she started screaming.
