Help evacuate my family from Gaza

Donation protected
I'm Maram from Gaza City, and I'm urgently raising money to evacuate my family out of Rafah. The Israeli army is escalating its attacks there and it's now too dangerous to stay. I'm desperate to get them out to safety as quick as I can before it's too late.

When the attacks on our neighbourhood in Gaza started last year, my parents and my brother fled our family home in Gaza City to shelter in Rafah. I'm now living in Istanbul.

My parents, Habis and Noha Wahidi, and my brother, Mohammad Wahidi, now desperately need to leave Rafah because attacks have started there too. But my family is stuck. There's nowhere left for them to flee to inside Gaza. Our entire neighbourhood in Gaza City, and everything around it, is completely disappeared. The bombs left my family with nothing.

My husband's parents face the same nightmare.

My father, Habis, is a retired doctor, now battling cancer and without access to healthcare. He lost vision in one eye last month because he can't get the medicine he needs in Gaza anymore - after dedicating his life to providing healthcare to Palestinians no matter what.

My mother, Noha, was injured in the Israeli attacks and needs surgery outside Gaza to save her arm.

Right now, it costs US$5000 per adult to evacuate across the Rafah border into Egypt.

Can you help my family - my mother, father, brother and my husband's parents - reach safety before it's too late for them?

My friend from Australia is helping me raise the money.

I'm Danya, from Melbourne, and was lucky enough to visit Gaza back in 2009. Contrasted with the horror there now, I was welcomed into the home of an incredibly kind Gazan host family - the El Wahidis. Maram and I quickly made friends and we've stayed in touch ever since. Gaza wasn't what it looked like on the news - we went to live music shows, poetry slams, breakdance performances, hung out at the epic beaches, admired the incredible urban farms, shopped at Al Rimal, visited schools and an enormous university, went out for late-night sweets and shisha, and ate more felafel in a few weeks than l have since. And I saw the devastating impacts of the first of Israel's 6 military attacks on Gaza. It's unspeakable to imagine that destruction now wrought across almost every place in that once-bustling, city-sprawl - the beachside cultural and education powerhouse that Gazans made thrive despite everything thrown at them. Relentless bombings have killed so many innocent Gazans, its beyond words.

Maram's family were incredibly kind, welcoming and generous. And now they urgently need help. I'm trying to help bring Maram's family out of Rafah before its too late.

Can you help them reach safety together?

With US$30,000 (AU$45,000) we can evacuate this family of 5 and help them stay in Egypt temporarily, or find a safe place to shelter in a third country nearby.

If they can't leave soon - it's impossible to imagine what they face.
