Hi, I’m fundraising for my 16 year-old girl, Lula’s, medical costs. Lula needs to be on continuous oxygen and likely doesn’t have much time left with us. After a routine vet appt on 3/25, there was concern about her breathing; We had to take her to the ER first thing the next morning, and she was hospitalized until late 3/28.
Doctors originally thought she may have congestive heart failure, after x-rays showed an enlarged heart. However, an echocardiogram let us know her heart is fine. After a second radiologist reviewed her x-rays, they said she could either have asthma or pneumonia. They began treatments of steroids and antibiotics to no avail. Doctors tried everything they could considering her age and condition (a lung wash and CT scan were discussed, but doctors determined she may not survive the procedures). The whole time, Lula had been on oxygen, with no improvement. Three days and over $5,000 later, we have no answers as to what could be causing her respiratory issues.
At final check in with the doctor, they gave us 2 options: bring her home, and keep her on oxygen at all times; or humanely euthanize her.
Of course we chose to bring her home to be more comfortable. Though she’s only been home a few hours, her spirit seems a little better than when we visited her at the hospital. However, what it means for her to be home is that she’ll have to always be in what’s called a buster box, except for potty breaks. This is basically a plastic kennel with a small port where the oxygen goes into. This requires the rental of not only the box, but an oxygen concentrator. This also means her quality of life will not be great.
Lula just recently turned 16 and as far as we knew, she was full of life. We often joked she would outlive us all. She is the sweetest girl and everyone falls in love with her. She loves to lie in the sun, loves to “talk”, and will eat ANYthing. We are so heartbroken and blindsided by her health taking a turn for the worst. It’s hard asking for help but she, and we, will need all the help we can get. We want to give her the best life we can, however long that may be. So our goal is to raise money to cover the cost of her hospitalization and costs for her continued care. Thank you so much!
