Our neighbor, 19-year-old Cole Roberts, was studying abroad in Prague and was hit at a crosswalk by a van and unfortunately suffered significant brain injuries.
Cole was in the Prague ICU for 29 days until he was flown to San Francisco on Thanksgiving Day. He was checked into CPMC rehab in San Francisco for cognitive, occupational, and physical rehab where he made significant physical progress, but still has a way to go with his neuro and cognitive brain recuperation.
His dad, Doug Roberts, and stepmother, Kimberly Layne Roberts, have been able to bring him home and are working with him to provide him with ~3 hours of cognitive exercises daily and 20-30 minutes of strength, balance, and agility exercises, plus 2-3 walks/day in the neighborhood hills, which Cole does mostly on his own.
He's making slow and consistent progress, typical of a TBI sufferer, but realistically, he still has a 2-3 year journey ahead of him to get back to himself.
Over the course of the next few months, he and his family will:
- Start outpatient therapy next week.
- Try an outpatient program using state-of-the-art diagnostic and rehab techniques used for athletes who suffer concussions and TBIs.
- Work with a UCSF maxillofacial surgeon to realign his jaw and replace 7 missing teeth.
- Continue to research other rehab facilities, trials, etc.
Not surprisingly, this is all very expensive and we are reaching out to the greater community to help raise some money for his support!
Let's help our neighbors out. Please give what you can. Nothing is too little!
