We have all known Kev for years as a committed, empathetic social worker, and a spirited, enthusiastic athlete. For almost thirty years, Kevin worked for the Mapleton In-Patient unit at South Beach Psychiatric Center, earning his MSW and becoming an Intensive Case Manager. His kindness and eagerness to help others were known to everyone; he was deeply loved by both his colleagues and his patients then, and he continues to be the guy who is there for you when no one else is.
In recent years, however, as a type 2 diabetic, Kevin has been plagued by painful foot infections that do not heal, resulting in the loss of several toes and a great deal of mobility. On May 29, 2021, he went to the hospital, fearing that something was seriously wrong. There it was discovered that the foot infection had, in fact, spread to the bone and he had become septic. His organs began to fail; he was placed on a ventilator and in an induced coma. He awoke weeks later to find his right leg had been amputated above the knee in order to save his life.
After remaining hospitalized for a month, Kevin was transferred to Seaview Rehabilitation Center, where he received little physical therapy supposedly because of the lack of an accommodating wheelchair. Four months later, when he finally returned home, his left leg had atrophied and he was unable to stand at all.
Kevin's medical needs are extreme and most are not covered by insurance. A chair lift has had to be installed on his front steps so he could even get into his house. He lives alone. Although a friend is staying with him temporarily, he is only there in the evenings and at night which puts Kevin in a precarious situation. Consequently, he will need to hire someone to help him with the activities of daily living during the day, until he is better able to manage alone. The amount of physical therapy he needs to strengthen his good leg and learn to walk with his prosthesis is extensive and his house has to be renovated to accommodate his altered situation.
We are reaching out and hoping you will contribute whatever you can to help Kevin's long and difficult road to recovery. Nothing is too small. You can also help by sharing this GoFundMe with people or organizations you think might be moved to help.
Thank you in advance for your help and support. We will keep you updated as to Kevin's condition and the improvements we have been able to make thanks to your generosity. To hear more about who Kevin is and why he is so loved, please click on the video.
