Dearest family, friends & kind strangers -
We’re writing on behalf of our beloved sister and daughter, Kiera Powers Quezada, who was recently diagnosed with triple-positive invasive ductal carcinoma—an aggressive form of breast cancer. She’s just 30 years old.
Having originally assumed this would end up being benign due to her age and overall great health, her diagnosis came as a shock to our whole family and we’ve been grappling for a hold on reality ever since.
While we truly believe no one deserves to get such devastating news at such a young age, Kiera and her wonderful husband Sam were really just getting started in this next chapter of their lives together. This vibrant young couple just got married last summer — the happiest celebration in our families’ lives to date. Kiera and Sam started to really look towards their future and make concrete moves towards it. They rescued an amazing dog named Polo from a very inhumane situation, dedicating all their extra time, energy and resources into rehabbing him for a long happy life after such a tough start. They also recently took the first time homebuyer’s course, re-prioritizing their lives and buckling down to move full steam ahead towards buying a home in preparation for growing their family together one day. Kiera and Sam were JUST about to book their honeymoon too… And just like that, this devastating diagnosis turned their world upside down overnight.
If you’re lucky enough to know her, you know Kiera is sunshine personified – she genuinely lights up every single room she’s in. She is bubbly and bright, hilarious and witty, and the most compassionate and caring person any of us has had the pleasure of knowing. In her personal and professional life she has the uncanny ability to connect with just about anyone, making them feel both seen and heard.
It should come as no surprise then that Kiera has dedicated her entire career to helping those in need. Since graduating college, she’s worked for various nonprofits, each with the goal of bettering children’s lives. She even went back to school at Northeastern a few years ago, obtaining her Master’s degree in Nonprofit Management to further her ability to help underserved communities by working directly in fundraising.
These days, Kiera works tirelessly to make sure low-income girls in Boston have access to high-quality, tuition-free education to further their hopes and dreams. She also directly organizes cutting edge STEM programs for the students by partnering with different hospital organizations in Boston. If her beloved students need ANYTHING, Kiera is the one stepping in to make it happen for them.
To put it simply, she’s the one everyone turns to when they need support — and now, she needs ours.
There are still so many unknowns at this time but we do know Kiera faces a long road to recovery. While her doctors are very optimistic about her treatment plan and she is without a doubt the strongest, most badass woman we know, the financial strain and emotional burden is truly immense. Insurance won't cover everything, and life doesn’t pause for a cancer diagnosis.
So, while Kiera’s focus is on fighting this cancer with Sam by her side every step of the way, our focus is on supporting them both in any way we can. We know there will be plenty of things we cannot do for them but one thing we absolutely can do is raise funds to help cover out-of-pocket costs during this time so Kiera and Sam can focus on what matters most: her recovery. We also aim to minimize the financial impact this could have on their future life plans together.
We understand if you are not in a position to donate financially and would greatly appreciate you simply sharing this fundraiser on social media or in community groups. Whether your support is financial, emotional, or spiritual— it truly means the world to our family. Your generosity in any form will lighten an enormous burden and let Kiera focus on healing and time with loved ones as she continues to fight.
If this resonates with you, if you know Kiera, if she’s touched your life in ways big or small, please consider donating to this cause. Any donation amount would be greatly appreciated and our gratitude - endless…
Please keep Kiera and her husband Sam in your thoughts and in your prayers.
Thank you,
The Powers Family
