First, meet the St. Paul City School family...
St. Paul City School is a charter school in the heart of the Frogtown neighborhood in St. Paul. It was first established in 1998 with a population of around 200 students. With the help of our dedicated community of teachers, administrators, and families we have grown exponentially! Our current enrollment is up to 475 amazing and diverse students. The student demographics consist of 40% Latino, 30% African American, 30% Hmong, less than 1% Caucasion/Native American, 99% Free & Reduced Lunch, and 100% hardworking and resilient students. Although many of our students still struggle with academics, they continue to come to school each day with their best effort to make academic gains.
Next, meet the Bautista family...
An extension of our St. Paul City School family, they mean so much to the livelihood of our school. As a hardworking immigrant family from Mexico, Socorro Neri- Vergara and her husband, Francisco Bautista relocated here to provide the best opportunities possible for their children. Michelle, Jair, and Johanan are three of our students. They have dedicated a lot of their time to St. Paul City School. As a family, they have helped us grow in enrollment and are always the first to offer support and volunteer at school. Socorro is a mother, aunt, and overall supporter of ALL students at SPCS. Two years ago during a routine doctor’s visit Socorro was told that both of her kidneys have gone into failure and that she would only have 6 months to live. Through perseverance Socorro is still with us today and has been approved for a kidney transplant! She has three donors ready and willing in her brothers, it is only the tremendous cost that is prohibiting her from receiving this life-saving operation. Doctors have estimated that it will take nearly $150,000 in total for the operations and care.
We cannot reiterate enough how giving this woman has been to those in our community. The Bautista family exemplifies love and support for those around them. As families are meant to be there in times of great need: It is our turn to give back.
