Started having migraines at the age of 10 and they have only gotten worse since. She spends most of her days in her bedroom with black curtains to block out the light. It would be impossible to count all the birthdays, holidays, and family get together's that she has missed out on over the years. She's unable to work. She also suffers from several blood clotting issues and seizures.
Medically
She has tried all medications used to treat migraines even the latest FDA approved medication that we were praying would work but didn't. She has done Botox injections, acupuncture, meditation and strong narcotic pain relievers for years. She had surgery where a stimulator was put in her lower back, then wired up her back and connected to the nerve (occipital nerve) to disrupt the signal to her head. This worked for about a year and we were so happy until it stopped working. Her insurance then denied her a second surgery to fix the stimulator that was not working. Since then there has been an improved surgery that is better. The insurance company said that they gave her a chance and it's not their fault that it doesn't work now.
Aprill has tried everything that several different neurologists have asked her to try. Her goal is to get this "Occipital Nerve Removal Surgery" and to get off all the pain medication. The Specialist may make other recommendations and she is open to all suggestions that they may make.
She will have to get a more expensive insurance in order to get into Mayo Clinic (Jacksonville), to be seen by one of their Neurologist Migraine and Headache Specialist. This doctor or doctors will evaluate her, consult with her other doctor's in hopes of getting her this extensive surgery. She will also have a 6-month recovery added to this.
Please contribute to this cause, help my mother get her life back. She does not receive disability and she needs to go to Mayo or Shands for the procedure they are the only ones who can do it.
