Mighty Max

Donation protected
On the frigid afternoon of January 18th, hearts were warmed as Mikey and Nikki welcomed the birth of their first child, Max. Even though Max was perfect in every way, Max’s parents were concerned something was not quite right with their new baby. The following morning, Max was diagnosed with esophageal atrecia with a transesophageal fistula. Max was transferred from West Allis Hospital to Children’s Wisconsin as he would need surgery to correct his congenital birth defect.

Esophageal atrecia with a transesophageal fistula is a congenital birth defect that occurs in about 1 in every 4000 births. The esophagus and trachea (windpipe) initially form as one tube about 4 to 8 weeks after conception. During that time, the pipe is to split into the trachea and esophagus. The upper part of Max’s esophagus did not connect to the lower part of esophagus. The upper part of the esophagus trailed into his windpipe. On January 22nd, at only four days old, Max underwent surgery to connect his lower esophagus to his upper esophagus, and to close the hole to his trachea.

While Mikey and Nikki have health insurance for Max, the deductibles and out of pocket costs will pile up quickly. Additionally, Max will need a lot of doctor appointments, tests, and follow up care. Max is expected to be in the hospital 3-4 weeks after surgery before he can finally go home. Mikey will be not working and taking in an income during that time either as he is staying at Children’s Wisconsin with Nikki and Max.

Mikey and Nikki would never ask anyone for help, but they will help anyone who asks for it. They are two of the kindest and most loving people you will ever meet. Please do not share this with Mikey and Nikki as they have no idea I am doing this, but I would like to raise some money to help with Max’s bills and their expenses. No donation is too big or too small. Please share with any family and friends of Mikey and Nikki’s that I may not have contact with. God bless you and God bless Mighty Max!
