Hey everyone my name is Stacy, I grew up in St. Elizabeth Jamaica. And seeing the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa has been heartbreaking. The place that shaped my childhood looks nothing like the home I remember. Black River and surrounding communities have been left in devastation. Homes are gone, roads are under water, businesses have collapsed, and many people are without food, clean water, clothing, or shelter. The death toll continues to rise daily, as more people are being found and more families report loved ones missing.
Growing up, going to Black River was something we looked forward to. It was a treat. I remember getting excited to go to town, walking through the market in the evening with music playing, shops still open, and laughter filling the air. It felt alive. It felt joyful. That sense of community is what made it home. Seeing that same town now silent, flooded, and destroyed is painful.
Farmers, who are the backbone of St. Elizabeth has lost everything. Entire fields of crops were washed away or ruined. For many families, farming is their only source of income. Without crops, there is no money, no food, no way to start over.
Children are now hungry and thirsty. Some have been seen asking strangers for water on the side of the road. Families who once had pride and independence are now facing desperation just to survive.
With Christmas approaching, a time Jamaicans usually fill with love, family, and celebration. The reality this year is heavy. Most families do not have home insurance so they will have to rebuild from nothing.
I am asking for help to support as many families as possible. Whether the donations go toward food, clothing, medication, a sheet of zinc, a piece of ply, anything. Every contribution helps.
If you are able to give, we thank you!
If you cannot give, please share this page so it can reach others.
Every little bit counts.
Thank you so much.
