One of the most beautiful things in life is when you have the privilege of seeing someone you love become themselves. And one of the most heartbreaking things is to watch that same person hit roadblocks in their journey, especially financial roadblocks. Unfortunately, this happens time and time again to trans folks, especially Black trans folks. The insurmountable cost of top surgery, coupled with the cost of recovery and bills, is oftentimes overwhelming and completely inaccessible. These challenges can make a moment that should be focused on celebration and healing a time of great stress and anxiety.
We all know Isis as someone who creates and builds community. Even more so with great intentionality and passion for Black and queer folks. They have made a career and legacy out of cultivating safe spaces and creating communities for others while asking for nothing in return. Isis is always unapologetically themselves, a sweet goof, a book nerd, smart, hard-working, generous, and yes even stubborn. They may do their best to put on a tough exterior, leaving us unaware that they are smiling through their pain, they’ll go out of their way to make you comfortable while living with the most tender heart for others. They created a safe space for other Black Nonbinary folks to come share their story with blkenby. Wanting to assure that no one else would go through this alone, that they are seen. That who you are is not only right, but beautiful, complex, expansive, and whole. Reminding everyone that being trans is sacred and deserving of everything and more.
It is time we show Isis the same support and love they pour into those around them. While Isis does have health insurance and this will cover some of the cost it will fail to cover most of the costs and additional expenses, including bills incurred during the weeks following for recovery. Donations from this campaign will go directly to Isis’ medical expenses and cost of living. Your donations will greatly reduce the anxiety around financial insecurity and help Isis to focus on a healthy recovery. Providing time and grace for them to heal and celebrate themselves without pressure or worry. While financial donations are greatly appreciated, we understand that this is a hard time for everyone.
