This is written by Sriram Ramaswamy on behalf of Rajeev and Dr. Selvaraj.

My close friend and colleague was a healthy, 49-year-old psychiatrist practicing at Omaha Insomnia Psychiatric Associates. On June 21st 2021, his life took a sudden turn. He had a middle cerebral and post cerebellar massive stroke and admitted in an ICU for 4 weeks during which he was unconscious for almost 3 weeks. He was then moved to Madonna Rehabilitation Center where he experienced a serious fall that resulted in a major head bleed, and he was back in the hospital for another 2 weeks. Subsequently, he was discharged to intensive stroke rehabilitation at QLI, a world-class rehabilitation center in Omaha, NE where he spent 3 months. His dominant side was affected (arm and leg) with expressive aphasia. Among other problems, he cannot walk, needs 24/7 1:1 supervision, his memory is impaired, receives speech therapy and lives in a rental home which he is unable to pay for. He has comorbid medical conditions including recent COVID infection which complicates his care and recovery. Rajeev is a highly trained and great clinician, enjoyed seeing patients and misses taking care of people with mental illness. Rajeev also served at the Lincoln Regional Psychiatric Hospital and has some retirement funds which have exhausted for his care so far. He has applied for Medicaid however have not been approved yet since we are experiencing roadblocks and delays in obtaining information about his net worth. Rajeev can’t go back to work in the foreseeable future and his savings are gone.

Rajeev is divorced and single and his family is in India and can’t visit him except for his minor child, ex-wife, cousin and friends. Rajeev’s colleague and boss, Dr. Selvaraj has assumed permanent guardianship and been a Godsend and draining her savings to help pay for his care.

We are not asking for a handout, just a helping hand. Enough to help us hold on until Medicaid and SSDI can realize my colleague’s situation. We never thought we would be asking like this, but the strokes hit like lightning. No warning. It's not fair, but it is my dear friend and an excellent physician’s new reality.

Please help if you can as when he was practicing psychiatry, he gave his best and everything to help patients recover from their mental illness. All donations will go to a bank account maintained by his legal guardian, Dr. Selvaraj.
