"We never thought our world ever have the words "gofundme" in it.
It took one day for my mom to make it to the neurologist, read the MRI results, and be immediately sent to the ER. In this one hospital stay, she has had an EEG, MRI, daily steriods, injections, pills, involvement with OT, and now discussion of plasmapheresis treatments. This hospital stay is intense for us as we are trying to figure out what MS means for my mother and how often her body has to take all of this. Following my mother's recent diagnosis with MS, my family has shortly realized how debilitating this autoimmune disease will be on her- physically, emotionally, and financially. I do not want my mother to contemplate helpful treatment options, options her body needs to get her better, because of finances. Insurance plans are not selected in July with a premonition that a disease will hit your family in October. She has a large deductible with a pretty realistic fear that her health will be requiring surprise services like this in the near future. Aside from missing work, the hospital tests, services, and costs per night in the hospital-- her new maintenance drugs will be hundreds of dollars a month which is something she needs to help eliviate these exacerbations.
During our first hospital stay my mom was to receive intense steroid treatment to calm the exacerbation of the MS flare up. We were in the hospital for 3 days. However it turned much more traumatic than just that. We're not sure how, whether it had something to do with the steroids or not, but she developed not one, but two sites of internal bleeding. We rushed her to hospital on a Saturday night, just 2 days after being released. Not really sure what we were going to be told was the problem, she ended up with two major surgeries, an intubation, and several blood and platelet transfusions. We almost lost her during the second bleed. Hearing the GI specialist tell us that had she been just a little older or a little weaker that she would not have made it, was indescribable. This time our stay was 5 days...already two weeks out of work, with MS symptoms and flare ups still going strong, and no real answers, we returned home to try to figure out our next steps.
By no means is this page an easy/lazy way out of paying for health on our own. This was a recommendation to try to have access to the funds we may need to get this fighter of MS, my deserving mother, the help that she needs without a worry of finances. My mother is a single mom who has always worked hard to support her family. We've always lived humbly within our means, no matter what difficulties we encountered, and there have been many. At this point, I'm not sure how to do it without asking for some sort of help. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your positive thoughts and considering assisting us with this journey.
