Dear friends and family,
It is through heartbreaking tears that I make this page and announcement. The Gatis family is going though a sudden and tragic health scare with their beautiful 9 month old baby girl Mila. On Thursday 8/29 she began projectile vomiting and was suddenly lethargic. Dimitri and Erika decided to rush her to the hospital where she was poked/ prodded and had an ultrasound of her intestines to rule out intussusception. Bloodwork, urinalysis and ultrasound all came back great. A new doctor came in and upon examining her eyes he ordered an immediate CT scan of her brain. The scan revealed a brain bleed that required emergency brain surgery. The chaos ensued trying to organize a life flight to Tampa or Miami for a pediatric neurosurgeon. Weather was an issue for the helicopter which was causing delays in the plan. At this point, a local neurosurgeon in naples agreed to preform the surgery to reduce the valuable transport time. She was transported via ambulance to NCH downtown where she was promptly operated on at 11:30pm. The surgeon removed a blood clot and requested she be transferred to Joe DiMaggio children’s hospital in Hollywood florida once she was stabilized. She was transferred Friday morning 8/30 with Erika in the ambulance to Joe DiMaggio children’s hospital. As you can imagine this has been the longest most terrifying 24 hours in Dimitri and Erika’s lives. The most recent update is that Mila will remain intubated and sedated for a period of time to let her body recover. Once they wake her the neurologists will test brain function. They expect to keep her for a minimum of 5 days in the ICU.
We are distraught to share this news and all feel completely helpless. The only way I know how to help them is by showering them with love and support and lessening their financial burden by creating this go fund me page for Milas medical expenses. At this point Mila is in the best care possible with her mommy and daddy by her side and all we can do is wait for answers. There are no signs of trauma and the Doctors have yet to discover the cause of her sudden brain bleed and clot. Please keep them in your thoughts and send Mila strength for her recovery.
Thank you for your love, support, and prayers during this extremely difficult time,
Tatiana Sherry
